SPRING HOURS START EASTER WEEKEND FROM TUE- SUNDAY from 10am-3pm
(We let the plants rest on Monday)

Nanoose Edibles Market has been trundling alone all winter, taking care of our on-farm and off-farm customers and getting ready for the 2014 growing season.  Easter Weekend Spring Opening. Come join us for a cup of Coyote Roasting coffee, take a tour of the farm, visit the greenhouses and Lorne's shop.  For this event we are featuring Certified Organic transplants grown on the farm, in small and large quantities.  Bring a container as you will be purchasing by the plant and not by the plastic container.  You can also leave us an order for transplants you require for the future.
Barb is offering to teach a Gardeners Workshop sometime in April or early May.  FOOD SECURITY FROM YOUR HOME GARDEN.  $45 person.  We’re suggesting a Saturday morning, here at the farm.  It could be a weekday.  I need to hear from you.  Handout material will be provided, so bring along a gardening binder. Please email us what day would work best. neorg@telus.net

ALR Bill 24

The bill is being debated this Monday(April 7)
The bill separates farm land into two zones. In the bills draft there is a possibility the land in zone 2(90%) could be used for non-farming purposes.  This could lead to the farm land being used for oil and gas companies.
With the current water crisis in California and already increased food costs. Bill 24 is totally wrong and should be withdrawn.
By degrading and undervaluing the agriculture land reserve we are destroying the provinces assured food supply.   It is  time for serious consultation with farmers and people of this province to assure adequate regulations  protect farmland and our food supply into the future.

Please act now - before Monday!
Let your voice be heard

NANOOSE EDIBLES FARM - March Newsletter
SEEDY SATURDAY:   Liz, Kiyomi, Lorne and I attended Nanaimo Seedy Saturday.     Kiyomi and Liz did a great job setting up and manning our booth , while Lorne and I  had a good wander about,  met up with old friends,  and attended the speakers’  presentations.   Nice to see people out and about at the end of a  long and ugly winter.
We enjoyed the speakers:    Dirk Becker at his informative and amusing best, and Connie Kuramoto speaking on  the dangers of GE food.  What did not get discussed is what we personally can do about it.   If all of us dedicated ourselves to growing and purchasing certified organic food we would be on the right track.   Certified organic food production is carefully monitored by good record keeping and third party inspections of all inputs from seed to the customer’s container.  As well, if we are not prepared to consume GMO food, we need to encourage our farmers to become  certified organic and move forward on making this a GMO free Region.  FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Discussing the Impacts of GE Crops' at 7:00pm on March 14 at Beban Park Social Centre (Rooms 7 and 8) https://www.facebook.com/gefreenanaimo

TIGH-NA-MARA: Thanks to Chef Eric and crew for inviting us to display and provide samples of our ‘greens’ for the Wine Makers Gala last Friday.  It was a grand event!!

VOLUNTEERS: Customers and farm friends who wish to learn how to grow their own gardens or just want to be involved growing produce are welcome to join our crew and work along with them.   It’s best to sign up so we can find out from you what your interests are and try to match you with the correct crew member.

APPRENTICES:  Because food production in this region a very low (less than three percent of the food purchased on the Island ) we encourage people who wish to learn how to farm to join the SOIL Apprenticeship Program at Nanoose Edibles Farm.  Sign up for a season of organic farming.  All aspects of farm production and marketing will be experienced by the candidate.   This offer is limited to people from the region, either on a full-time or part-time basis.  Learn about growing food the healthy way and reduce the invasion of GE food into the region. neorg@telus.net

ORGANIC GARDENING WORKSHOP:  A few years back I offered a series of gardening workshops   called FOOD SELF-SUFFICIENCY FROM YOUR HOME GARDEN.   We’ll call this one FOOD SECURITY FROM YOUR GARDEN.  I’m suggesting that it be held on Saturday, April 12th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., but it could be held on a weekday if that suited everyone better.    Handout material will be provided and if you have a gardening workbook please bring it along.  Cost:  $45 per person.

Winter Market Hours:

Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 10.00am - 3.30pm (about dusk)

If you have been to the farm in the last while you might have seen Caleb and his family who are living at the farm. We welcome Caleb’s family and the wealth of knowledge that Caleb brings to the farm.

The farm has been busy cleaning seeds from 2013 which we will be selling at Seedy Saturday on Feb 1 in Qualicum Beach. http://www.qbseedysaturday.com/  Be sure to look for Barb and Caleb at the booth and say hello.  We will have transplants, seeds, and signup sheets for volunteers, u-pick, and pickers for the farm. We will have more seeds available at Sugar Shack seeds who will be cleaning our Certified Organic Seeds. Check out the sugar shack seeds at Seedy Saturday or www.sugarshackseeds.com for locally grown seed. Grown as Mother Nature intended, all open-pollinated seed, untreated, non-GMO, a lot of heirloom varieties.

Our transplants are coming along and we will have suitable transplants at the beginning of each month.  This month we have parsley, dill, arugula, fennel, lettuce, cilantro and strawberry transplants. We will have some at Seedy Saturday and the Qualicum Beach farmers market on Feb 1 but will likely go fast.  If you would like to purchase transplants from the farm please email Barb neorg@telus.net

The farm is excited to have the International Organic Inspectors Association come to our farm in February do a mock training exercise for Certified Organic Crops.

The farm is going digital! We have launched a Youtube channel and will be updating it often with farming information. Please subscribe J http://www.youtube.com/user/nanooseediblesfarm

Next month we will be moving the newsletter to a service for newsletters called Mailchimp to make the newsletter easier to manage.  We will be importing the email addresses over and will send out a reminder closer to next month to make sure it doesn’t go to your junk mail.

NANOOSE EDIBLES FARM – CELEBRATING OVER 26 YEARS SERVING THE REGION WITH FRESH, NUTRITIOUS, ORGANIC PRODUCE

NEW WINTER Market Hours:
Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 10.00am - 3.30pm (about dusk)

WE WILL CLOSE FOR THE HOLIDAYS – December 23st to January 2nd

Indoor/Outdoor Winter Market – It is getting frosty out there…  We are only able to pick when we have enough light and the crop is somewhat thawed.   However, we still have at the stand – apples, pears, salad greens, nutritional greens, kale , beets, potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, and much more.

Nanoose Edibles has now cleaned and bagged our 2013 harvest of Dried Beans.  If you haven’t tried freshly grown organic dried greens you are in for a nice surprise.  Available in sample size as well as by the pound.  Soak for 4 hours and cook for 40 minutes, turn off the heat and allow to rest in the pan.

This Christmas Season we are offering Gift Baskets made from specialty items from the neighbourhood as well as produce items from Nanoose Edibles.   These will be packaged and wrapped for gift giving – made up to your specifications.   Prices range from $30 to $50 depending on content.   Please contact us by telephone or Email and give our staff an hour or so to prepare the baskets.

Gift certificates are also available at the stand which make perfect stocking stuffers!

Every Christmas season Barbara cuts down greens and creates pots with assorted winter greens with holly. They are great to put outside on your verandah or on your front door.  It would also make a nice gift for a neighbour or as a substitute for a Christmas tree.  Price $20-$30 per pot.

Happening in the Community

Feb 21- 23, 2014 Certified Organic Association will be at the Coast Bastion Inn in Nanaimo for its annual conference – the theme this year – Work-Life Balance.

Honolulu
signed a bill on Thursday ”prohibiting biotech companies from operating on the Big Island and banning farmers from growing any new genetically altered crops.” This is big news for the GMO free community with something we all need to strive to put into place. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/12/05/big-island-biotech-ban_n_4395521.html

Land needs to be protected because it effects everything around it -  “Infinito Gold, a Canadian mining company, just slapped Costa Rica with a $1 billion lawsuit because the nation decided to protect its rainforests rather than host an open-pit gold mine.” http://action.sumofus.org/a/mining-costarica/8/2/?akid=3110.1848529.6wLchb&rd=1&sub=fwd&t=2
